Summer Getaway

A few weeks before the 4th of July, my husband mentioned the idea of planning a summer getaway for the long weekend. We wanted to go somewhere that wasn’t too far from the city, but still felt like an escape, and it had to be dog friendly because we’ve been apart from Bones too much over the past few months. The first thing I did was look for dog friendly hotels, and then explored the surrounding areas. We settled on The Time Nyack, a new hotel in Rockland County that has almost as many amenities for dogs as it does for humans!

The Time Nyack

The Time is situated right by a major highway, but you wouldn’t know it once you step inside. One of the things that drew me to this particular hotel was the decor. It’s contemporary and chic, with a funky edge, and every space makes a statement. I especially loved our room, and the boys did too.

As part of our pet-friendly package, we got a dog bed and teepee set up in our room, along with bowls, a treat, and a new toy for Bones. My favorite thing was the waste bag dispenser that has a built-in flashlight, a godsend if you ever have to walk your dog down a dark street (and pick up after him too!)

Bones wasn’t too sure about the teepee, but he was all about the bed. We didn’t let him sleep in the bed with us for the first couple of years, but one weekend I went out of town, and the rest is history! Fortunately, this bed was a King, so there was plenty of room for all of us.

The hotel had a restaurant and bar called BV’s Grill. We ate brunch there our first morning and were able to sit outside with Bones, which was great. The food was tasty, and the staff was very friendly. Unfortunately, on our second morning, there was a wedding group having a brunch that took over the entire outside area, but with three wedding groups staying there that weekend, we weren’t too surprised. Cocktails at the bar were great too, and it was nice that we could pick up a drink after dinner and bring it back to our room to enjoy.

One more thing we were looking for in a hotel was a pool, and The Time has a great one. The pool itself is on the smaller side, but there were plenty of comfy lounge chairs in and out of the sun. It was hot, so we only lasted a couple of hours, but I was excited to wear one of my new one-pieces and take some time to relax.

When we weren’t at the hotel, we were eating! (I’m only kind of kidding lol) A couple of people told us that Nyack is known for its restaurants, so we had to try as many as possible. I pride myself on my restaurant researching skills, and I think I did pretty well this trip.

The morning when we couldn’t eat brunch at the hotel, we went into town to Johnny Cakes. I had this banana and peanut butter stuffed French Toast that was as good as it looked!

We got lunch at Hudson House and Prohibition River. Both had outdoor seating where we could sit with Bones, and although both were good, I was particularly impressed by the Grilled Cheese shots at Prohibition River. They were literally in shot glasses and super tasty!

Our first dinner was at a cute little Peruvian restaurant called Maura’s Kitchen. We both really enjoyed what we ordered. I had a local fish special and the hubs had seafood paella. So good!

Our favorite meal was dinner on our last night at Il Fresco, an adorable Italian restaurant about 15 minutes from our hotel. They had very tasty cocktails and the food was incredible. I had caprese on garlic bread for an appetizer, and yet still had room for my pasta entree. I ate way too much that night, but it was too good to pass up 🙂 The husband had mini calzones as an appetizer and Rigatoni Bolognese for an entree, and is drooling as he thinks about them now.

In case you were wondering if we did anything besides eat and lounge by the pool, we did go for a 2+ mile hike along the Hudson River in Nyack Beach State Park. It was beautiful and lush, and SO quiet. Although it was hot out, it felt good to be outside and get some exercise after all that eating. Bones was wiped afterwards and we were too.

Overall, it was a great trip. It’s always nice to take a break from the craziness of the city and get away, and I especially love spending quality time with my husband and the pup. Nyack isn’t necessarily a place one would think of as a “vacation destination,” but it’s definitely perfect for a little summer getaway!

  1. This looks like an awesome little getaway – cool but also peaceful, which is my ideal combo. And I love that the hotel had special accommodations for Bones!
