Some people think that gift cards are too impersonal, but I think they make the best last minute gifts! When you’re down to the wire and you still have people left on your holiday shopping list, the ability to pop into a store and go right up to the register or have a gift in someone’s inbox in a few clicks is pretty priceless.
A couple of tips: if you go into a store, try to pick up something small to add a tangible touch to the gift. For example, I gave my mom a LOFT gift card for Hanukkah, and threw in a pair of their cozy socks. I know she likes them, I don’t have to worry about if they’ll fit, and she still has the opportunity to go shopping and pick things out for herself. Also, if you don’t know where your friends and family like to shop (or if they don’t like to shop at all), get them a gift card that’s more experience-based, or something that will give them a chance to treat themselves. Here are some ideas:
- Treat them to some fancy grooming with a gift card for a blowout, shave, or mani/pedi.
- Help them relax with a gift card for a massage or a class at their favorite yoga studio.
- Convince them to take a break from the grind with a gift card that will help them plan their next getaway.
- If they’re on a fitness kick, get them a gift card to try out a new workout spot (or one that they think is too pricey, but have always wanted to try!).
- For the music and culture-lovers, send them a gift card to a website where they can apply their gift credit to concert and/or show tickets of their choice.
- Take them out for a nice meal, even if you can’t be there.
