I got this coat a couple of years ago at the LL Bean Factory in Freeport, ME. It was the color that drew me to it, and I was excited to see that it came in petite sizes. I tried on my usual Petite Medium, but found it to be a bit large, even over a sweater, so I had them order me a Petite Small. Often times, I don’t go to the effort of having a store order a special size, but this coat was such a beautiful, bold color, a great length for my shorter frame, and it had a band at the waist that was super complimentary to my shape. I couldn’t imagine my closet without it! Even though Fall is often known for deeper colors and neutrals, a coat is a great way to add a punch of brightness to your outfit.
When you’re shopping, try your best to have an open mind. Remember that different brands and stores run differently when it comes to size. For petites, you may have to try on a coat in the store and then order the petite version online. There are actually a lot of brands that offer a great variety of petite sizes in outerwear, and you’ll find that the sleeve length and the length of the coat itself will be much more complimentary. Another option is to try to find a mature-looking coat in the Juniors section. Although long coats are great for colder temperatures, a shorter peacoat style like the one I’m wearing is the perfect top layer for Fall. For pear-shaped girls, look for an a-line coat, or one with a band at the waist like mine. You can always add a belt if the coat feels too boxy as it is.
I paired my coat with my favorite purple skinny jeans and some black suede wedge booties. The jeans were an amazing TJMaxx find!
