Mixing patterns used to be a major faux-pas. The concept of pairing stripes and plaid would make any fashionista cringe. But now, in this age of breaking all the rules, pattern mixing has actually become a fashionable trend. I’ll admit, I was hesitant at first, but I’ve come to love finding fun ways to mix up my patterns. There are definitely different degrees of mixing, so if you’re not sure you can handle it, ease yourself in. Try a striped shirt with leopard print loafers, or pair a black and white pattern with a colorful one. No matter how extreme you go, make sure your patterns are cohesive. The easiest way to do this is to find patterns with a common color, or at least complimentary colors, or stick with neutrals. Step outside your comfort zone, and forget the rules!

Those these examples of pattern mixing. I have a gingham shirt that I want to mix with a tweed skirt, but so far I haven’t taken the plunge. Baby steps!
